It seems as though every day there is a new article on the wonders of probiotics including their effect on weight, belly fat, and metabolic syndrome. Can taking a daily probiotic help you lose weight or is it junk science?

Gut Microbes: The Good Guys Versus the Bad Guys
There are countless microorganisms in and one the human body. Some of them are “good” bacteria and some are “bad” bacteria. Researchers believe the bacteria have an impact on weight loss and gain. When the bad bacteria outweigh the good, it leads to an imbalance in the gut known as dysbiosis. This can occur when there is not enough diversity amongst the bacteria. This is the reason it’s important to eat a wide variety of foods. Doing so helps to increase the diversity of gut bacteria. This lack of balance and diversity according to research published in 2013 can contribute to obesity while not being the underlying cause. Those at a healthy weight show a marked difference in their gut bacteria when compared to those at an unhealthy weight. The lack of diversity is also linked to inflammation in the body and inflammation is the root of many chronic conditions including metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes.
